Unisys signs deal with Rational ... or does it?

The curious case of the unknown 'worldwide deal'

A curious conundrum has emerged involving Unisys and IBM Rational.

Unisys southern region manager Brett Hodgson recently told Computerworld that the corporation had signed a worldwide deal involving IBM Rational. He didn’t have any other details.

But IBM locally didn’t know anything about a deal with Unisys, despite escalating its inquiries to world headquarters.

Hodgson subsequently quoted from an IBM email: “Unisys global have recently completed the purchase of a large number of Rational licences, which has resulted in IBM NZ receiving revenue recognition for those being used by Unisys NZ in the course of your business.”

IBM’s response to our further inquiries was remarkably bland: “Unisys is a long-time customer of IBM and has used Rational tools on many successful software development projects. We look forward to continuing to work closely with them, but have no new details to discuss at this time.”
