Genesis Energy to resell DSL

Electricity vendor offers yet another anaemic 'broadband' plan

Yet another electricity company is jumping onto the broadband wagon. However, Genesis Energy is not rolling out its own fibre offering as Vector did last month, but is simply reselling Telecom services.

Genesis offers three "broadband" plans based on Telecom's 256kbit/s download, 128kbit/s upload wholesale plan, priced at $53.95 for up to 3GB of traffic each month; $59.95 for 6GB of traffic; and $109.95 for unlimited traffic. Genesis offers its "Infogen Safety" limit for overuse; customers who exceed their limit will pay $0.015 per megabyte up to a total of $29.95 extra per month.

Customers who are also Genesis Energy customers will be charged $10 a month less.

Last month another electricity company, Vector, announced it was offering 2Mbit/s download, 1Mbit/s upload services on its fibre-optic network in central Auckland for $329 per month.

Counties Power, in South Auckland, has led the way for electricity companies moving into the bandwidth business. Its Wired Country subsidiary offers both fibre and fixed wireless services in and around Auckland.
