Heatwave hits datacentre

Air conditioning to the rescue: Orcon

Auckland ISP Orcon’s datacentre on the city's North Shore was overheated yesterday (Monday). The datacentre is maintained by Vector.

Reportedly, the temperature was close to 30 degrees celsius at the most critical point. Datacentre temperatures are generally kept at around 20 degrees.

There are more than 500 hosted servers in the datacentre, and none of the servers went down due to the heat yesterday, according to Orcon marketing manager Duncan Blair.

The temperature in the datacentre had been rising for a couple of weeks, due to several new machines that have high heat output, says Blair. Orcon has now installed extra air conditioning units to keep the temperature down.

“It’s all sorted at the moment, and there is a new 45 kW air conditioning unit being installed in the next couple of weeks as a permanent solution,” he says.
