Vodafone customers discover life without cellphone service

TXTers and mobile addicts get a taste of cold turkey

Vodafone subscribers briefly found out what life is like without a working cellphone yesterday.

An outage on the company's network affected Vodafone callers for 20 minutes from 3.07pm yesterday, Vodafone spokeswoman Leigh Owens says.

At least some customers had no Vodafone service until nearly 6pm — Computerworld staff among them — but Owens says the outage was repaired well before then. "We received some calls to our contact centre and if there were any delays after 3.27pm, it would have been due to congestion," she says.

Vodafone–Vodafone calls were curtailed nationwide, but Vodafone–Telecom Mobile and Vodafone–landline calls were possible south of Onehunga, she says.

Owens says the cause of the outage appears to have been a power disruption at a Vodafone facility and an investigation is being conducted.

She says network outages due to power outages are rare.
