ACC data warehouse to get makeover

Vendors asked to tender for ETL and metadata tools

ACC is upgrading its data warehouse and is seeking new ETL (extract, transform and load) and metadata tools to add greater functionality than the existing warehouse provides.

The current warehouse, called the Scheme Performance Data Warehouse, is to be upgraded to what ACC calls an enterprise data warehouse and will provide ACC with business intelligence capability.

It will also increase the number of specialist SAS analysts employed at ACC, according to tender documents for the ETL and Metadata tools.

SAS will remain an integral part of the data warehouse, but the tender for ETL and Metadata is open to other vendors.

A new hardware platform is also part of the project and tender documents state "there are around ten business analysts catered for on the current warehouse, but it is envisaged there could be around 50 potential users [who] could access and manipulate higher level data, without requiring programming skills."

The new ETL tools will "provide for more sophisticated data management within the warehouse," the documents state and the new warehouse "will have a larger scope than the existing data warehouse, with a clearly defined role in operational reporting as well as management reporting."

Having data latency at 12 hours, and possibly as early as one hour, is a goal of the project and the warehouse will cater for analysts who can write code and analyse data, others with experience of pre-prepared data and non-technical staff who will access it via a browser from their desktop.
