Microsoft promises MSDN price correction

NZ developers paying up to 66% more than the US

Microsoft will partly redress seriously out-of-kilter pricing in New Zealand for its Microsoft Developer Network in October.

“It’s looking like a 15-20% drop in price,” says Paul Muckleston, sales and marketing director.

Pricing figures provided to Computerworld by a reader for the six MSDN products indicate New Zealand developers are paying between 41% and 66% more, on an after-tax basis, than the US recommended retail price.

It gets worse. If the products are sourced from Amazon, the differences ranges from 87% to 111%.

Microsoft Asia–Pacific sets the pricing for the region for MSDN. “It’s one of those products that hasn’t been adjusted for some time,” Muckleston says. “We’re planning to review it downward on October 1.”

Examples from the comprehensive spreadsheet provided by the reader show that MSDN Universal New has a US recommended retail price, in New Zealand dollars, of $4,260. The price in New Zealand, excluding GST, is $6,582. Enterprise New in the US is $3,347 but $5,373 in New Zealand. Professional New is $1,824, compared to $2,931.

Microsoft Developer Network is a set of services to help developers write applications using Microsoft products and technologies. It offers a full set of server products, heavily discounted to the individual retail prices, online tools and a knowledge base.

“It delivers a huge amount of products at up to 80% discount on retail prices,” Muckleston says. New Zealand has one of the highest uptakes of MSDN anywhere, he says.
