Telecom suspends Unbundled Bitstream Service

Telco 'surprised' at ComCom statement and has asked for urgent talks

Telecom today suspended the release of its version of the wholesale UBS, following the Commerce Commission's warning to ISPs that it doesn't meet the recommendations for the regulated bitstream service.

The commission said on Friday that Telecom's proposed unbundled bitstream service (UBS) doesn't match the service outlined in its recommendation against local loop unbundling released in December last year and accepted by the government in May.

Martin Butler, manager of strategy and planning at Telecom's wholesale services group, says the telco is surprised by the warning and has asked for urgent talks with the commission to to identify and understand its concerns and work towards a resolution.

Expressing concerns about meeting Telecom's target of acquiring 250,000 broadband customers by the end of the year, Butler says that the telco would rather not delay the launch of UBS, and hopes the delay will be brief.

Work on the UBS will continue, as will the recently announced trials with Orcon and Ihug, Telecom says.
