Optimation will this month launch into New Zealand its business process management partnership with Australian company Capability Management. The two have had a relationship in Australia for the past few years.

Capability Management was formed 10 years ago by Jed Simms, who previously ran IT consulting strategy for the Boston Consulting Group.

“We were asking why companies weren’t getting value out of IT,” he says. “The differentiator between businesses in the same sector was what the business actually did and didn’t do. We developed a maturity model to measure what returns there were, based on processes and management involvement.

“There was a direct correlation between capability and return.”

The Boston Consulting Group decided that wasn’t its scene, so Simms established Capability Management.

The process of analysing a business and training its staff takes 14 weeks.

Simms says Capability Management recently reviewed all the banking processes for a second-tier Australian bank.

“They’d already selected the software, and their original business case was for $11 million of expenditure with projected savings of $7 million recurring annually.

“After we reviewed the processes, the cost went down to $10.5 million and the benefits up to $49 million recurring annually.”
