Cordless mouses for all

Everyone should have a wireless mouse.

The (many times) daily annoyance of impeded mouse movement caused by the long tail that attaches to my notebook’s USB port frequently causes me to curse. After a week of using Logitech’s cordless optical model, I’m only kicking myself for not doing something about it sooner.

The usual mouse complaints still arise. That is, it’s sometimes slower than you want, in a way reminiscent of sticky-ball-syndrome (that phenomenon of mechanical mouses clogged up with desktop dust and dirt). And with its two AA batteries, it feels a bit weighty (I’m also yet to discover how long the batteries last; the mouse has an off switch for when it’s not in use to preserve their life).

But the overall experience of being rid of the mouse cable makes up for any of that. It has the added bonus (untested, except by taking the mouse for a walk a few metres from the USB receiver plugged into my computer to see what its range is) of untethering the presenter from their notebook when giving a slide show.

Logitech’s cordless mouse (for notebooks) costs about $80. Next up I’ll be keen to test drive the company’s Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, released late last month.
