Gen-i lays off staff in wake of acquisition

Gen-i has made about 12 staff redundant, some of whom were former employees of software company Nota Bene, which Gen-i acquired earlier this year.

"When we made the acquisition of Nota Bene a couple of months ago, we bought the company lock, stock and barrel," Gen-i chief executive Garth Biggs says. "Subsequently, we've been looking at who does what and they had a sales team that doesn't fit our sales model.

"Nota Bene operated in the Lotus Notes-WebSphere space and had a very focused, specialised sales force, whereas we have a very customer relationship-focused salesforce."

Biggs won't specify how many of the 12 or so positions eliminated were sales and how many were terminated for other reasons, but says the non-sales redundancies came about from "balancing the workload across Auckland and Wellington. Some people in Wellington had skills we didn't see ourselves deploying and utilising in the foreseeable future."

Biggs says the number of staff let go should be put in the context of Gen-i's current headcount of 680.

"We also have 30 vacancies."

Of the redundancies, "it's really just a process of saying 'have we got the right people with the right skills in the right place at the right time?'.

"Some of those skills aren't re-locatable on a geographical basis and others can't be utilised because of changing demand."
