Chinese movies next target for Vista

Auckland-based cinema management software creator Vista Entertainment Solutions is following its successful foray into India with an entry to the Hong Kong market.

Cinema management software creator Vista Entertainment Solutions - now a subsidiary of the newly created Wellington company Infinity Group - says it may not have had the "nerve" to enter the Hong Kong market without its parent, despite a successful foray into India.

The Auckland-based company, which was a subsidiary of software developer Madison Group, which Infinity also bought, is tying up a contract with Hong Kong cinemas. Its software has been installed in Auckland, Fiji, Singapore, Malaysia, Argentina and North America.

Vista chief executive Murray Holdaway says the necessarily large investment for the project, which will require Vista to create a Chinese language version of its software, is greatly assisted by available capital backing from the Infinity Group.

“Before we were with them, we may not have had the nerve to do it.”

The Indian contract, with cinema operator Big Tree Entertainment, needs some alteration of the Vista software. The cinema industry in India is partly government-owned, says Holdaway, “and there are quite a lot of government rules and regulations to be satisfied”.

Also, the Indian cinema favours large auditoriums seating up to 3000 people at a single movie, with a range of prices for seats in different parts of the theatre, rather than New Zealand’s and other countries’ leaning towards the flat-priced multiplex. Vista has engaged Indian company Microland to help with the systems integration and other aspects of implementation.
