The government, through the Ministry of Education, plans a “Computers in Homes” scheme – modelled on Alan Duff’s “Books in Homes.”

The new scheme will facilitate or even support financially the introduction of PCs into the home environment to help children develop the skills needed for the age of e-business, digital entertainment and Web research.

There will also apparently be a branch of the scheme aimed at putting computers on marae.

While Moerangi Vercoe at the office of Education Minister Trevor Mallard admits there is such a scheme in the offing, she declines to go into details pending an official announcement, to be made “later this week”.
