Kiwi firms travel to London, Hannover thanks to UK gov't

Two New Zealand companies are off to trade show CeBIT in Germany and to London to meet with potential business partners - all courtesy of the British government.

Two New Zealand companies are off to Europe courtesy of the British government.

Auckland-based intranet solution developer Rex and Christchurch-based industrial technology company QTech Data Systems are both travelling to London with a party of Australian companies thanks to Trade Partners UK, a government initiative designed to help "British and New Zealand companies form mutually beneficial partnerships".

They will also attend the CeBIT trade show in Germany.

The aim is to raise the awareness in British companies of developments in the region, and to enable selected Australasian companies to see at first hand the strengths of the British ICT sector.

Rex's solutions director David Inggs is thrilled to get the opportunity to not only display at the world's largest ICT trade fair but also to meet with clients and prospective partners in the UK.

"They pay about 75% of the costs and we pay the rest but it means we get to meet potential business partners in Britain which is great for us."

Rex already has a partnership with Synergy International, a New Zealand based IT solutions company that has offices in Singapore and London. However Inggs says Rex would like to expand beyond that relationship and hopes this trip will enable him to grow his business in Europe.

QTech's director Steve Champ says the UK government is looking for partnerships, rather than helping New Zealand and Australian companies find clients in the UK in competition with British companies.

"They're looking for opportunities for UK companies to partner with Australasian companies. I think they have the view that some times these companies aren't quite looking outside the square when it comes to opportunities down here. There are opportunities even though there's sometimes a difference between the exchange rates, if you like, between us and them."

CeBIT runs from March 12 to 19 in Hannover and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world.
