Quicksilver is the latest ISP to offer server-based anti-virus scanning, and it's free for those customers who pay with direct debit or credit card.

Quicksilver will use a solution from German software developer, F-Prot and definitions will be updated each night.

While most of the big national ISPs have jumped on to the bandwagon - Xtra, Ihug and ICONZ all offer services -TelstraClear has yet to decide how its service will be structured. It has said it will launch a server-based anti-virus solution in the new year, however.

A number of smaller ISPs also offer server-based AV. Internet Hawkes Bay has a solution free to all email users as well as some levels of spam filtering, says service manager Steve Bluck, and Waiuku-based ISP, Packing Shed, has had a solution in place since November, making it possibly the country's first ISP to offer a server-based anti-virus solution.

Xtra's home page reports the service has blocked over 6 million viruses since its inception earlier this year.
