Dear What Am I Worth,

I'm a senior network administrator working for a medium-sized company of 1000 users. I have seven years' experience in the industry, three years of which was in London working contracts for various blue-chip companies.

My qualifications are MCSA 2000, formerly MSCE NT4 and CCA, with a diploma in development -- which I attained at the beginning of my career but decided against being a developer.

At present my position involves overseeing the maintenance of our NT4 environment, mentoring and assisting the other five network analysts, but my main responsibilities are to design the new Windows 2000, Active Directory and Citrix environments. In addition to these projects, we are implementing a SAN solution with 1TB of mirrored disk and a robotic library.

I have worked for this company for two years, and previously worked as a consultant, installing Windows 2000 and Citrix solutions for clients.

Elan IT replies: You are assisting and mentoring five network analysts, but you don’t mention whether you are team leader or part of the team. Similar with the SAN solution -- there is no mention of how many are in the team or your involvement.

In assuming that you are one of the team, you are likely to be in the vicinity of $60,000 to $70,000. In a team leadership role you may get up to $85,000 dependent on the number in the team. As for positions elsewhere, roles similar to this come up occasionally, but you would find that the competition would have increased significantly since you were last in the market.
