Dear What Am I Worth,

I am responsible for the design, maintenance and upkeep of a number of mission-critical multi-user MS Access databases.

I have two years’ experience. I also am responsible for the upkeep of our head office NT 4 server, which is a file server, domain controller and email (MS Exchange) server.

I also look after all 30 Win9x client workstations, both helping users with problems and trouble-shooting network issues. I also built, installed and maintain our Redhat Linux file/email server at our Auckland branch, along with the 20 workstations connected to it.

I maintain our DNS server, software-based VPN and dedicated Internet connections. I also upgrade/replace client computers when necessary.

I am halfway through a computing degree, although I am taking time off to earn some money. I have also just started my MCSE [Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer].

Intellimark replies: From your letter, it sounds like you have a number of strong technical skills that you have built up over your time with the company. For desktop support roles (which may include some administration as well) you would be looking at a salary of around $40,000. Once you have your qualifications completed, your value should rise to between $45,000 and $50,000.
