Dear What Am I Worth,
I am the GIS Officer for a small rural-based district council. I have been employed here for 18 months.
We have an IT department of two - the manager and myself. As a result of this I do a lot of network administration, software installation, helpdesk, Intranet development/maintenance and anything else that needs doing. This is on top of the GIS work.
My experience is with Windows 95/98 clients running on NT servers and supporting MS Office, MapInfo and other software. Previously I worked at another district council, as a GIS technician, also using MapInfo, and additionally AutoCAD, before my approximately four years of GIS work. I have a civil engineering background. I have A+ certification.
I have a long history with computers and would like to move into another field. I am looking for a systems administrator, network support officer or similar position. I also would like to move out of local government. I am 28 years old. What am I worth?

Intellimark replies: With 18 months' experience in an IT support role, you have a number of options. You could look at a helpdesk/desktop support role that could be a good way for you to gain solid experience with the possibility of advancing through the company. For this sort of role you would be looking between $40,000 and $45,000. For a network support role you will need to have solid grounding in NT Server and network protocols, and from what you have described in you could expect around $45,000. An A+ certificate is a bonus, and if you decide to take some MCP's [Microsoft Certified Professional courses] this could increase your initial package by a few thousand dollars.
