Auckland-based Unified Communications hopes the sale of its four-way messaging system, Communiporte, to Hong Kong mobile data services provider IBS will lead it into China.

The six-figure deal is the company’s first outside Australasia and means IBS can resell Communiporte to its business customers. In return, UCL will use the IBS mobile data platform for delivery, and receive ongoing revenue.

Communiporte is a message gateway system, presenting a single interface for sending voice, fax, email and SMS messages. It is aimed at businesses with dispersed workforces who need to be sent messages regardless of the form in which they arrive.

UCL chief executive Norman Holtzhausen says through IBS his firm now has a global presence at 500 operators in 100 countries. IBS will also be the “ideal partner to penetrate the key Asia-Pacific markets — Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and China”, he says.

The system UCL has put in place in Hong Kong is capable of sending five million messages a month, including 250,000 voice and fax messages a month.

The IBS offering also directly caters forc the double-byte character requirements of Asian languages, Holtzhausen says. “They have experience in Chinese culture, working on user interfaces to make them more user-friendly to the Chinese.”

Holtzhausen says in addition to an initial payment his company will receive an ongoing payment from IBS, based on traffic volume.

The seven-employee UCL is owned by Auckland-based Simpl Group, US-based Bulletin Wireless and its directors.
