NRMA Insurance, owner of State Insurance, has outsourced its IT structure to Wellington-based integrator gen-i for the next five years in a deal worth $40 million.

NRMA, owned by the Insurance Australia Group (IAG), currently has 1250 desktops running on a Citrix thin client environment. With two server farms, a national ATM and frame relay network and two data centres to look after, gen-i will take on board existing NRMA IT staff.

Gen-i won the tender over EDS after assembling a consortium that includes Telecom, Datacraft and RentWorks.

Limiting NRMA's total cost of ownership will be the largest challenge for gen-i, according to a press statement issued today. Part of the deal requires gen-i to "enhance" NRMA's IT systems over the five year period.
