National Bank has built a system using XML that gives users of one third-party accounting software access to its online banking system.

The XML gateway system, which was developed in Java, allows customers using NZA Gold — it is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses — to make payments and access transaction information without leaving the software package or needing to access banking web pages. Payments can be queued in NZA Gold before they are submitted to the bank.

National Bank e-commerce manager Andrew Cliffe says customers will be able to automate much of their banking reconciliation and pay creditors through the bank. They will also be able to transfer funds between accounts.

Cliffe says the bank has no plans to integrate with other software accounting packages at this stage. It chose to work with NZA Gold because it is a top package in the medium-sized business market and is New Zealand-owned.
