Local NetWare users are to benefit from a discount upgrade scheme.

The company is offering to upgrade NetWare 3 users to NetWare 6 globally at what it describes as a “substantial discount”. It intends to also provide a cheaper upgrade path for users at no additional cost. Novell New Zealand head Peter Revell says the discount is about 75% off.

“For example, a 100-user company would typically pay approximately $19,000 for the upgrade plus $7500 for annual upgrade protection [before licence discounts]. Under the promotion, the NetWare 3.x customer can upgrade 100 users for approximately $7000 [before any other licence discounts] and this includes annual upgrade protection [about 20% of the upgrade cost]."

NetWare 3 was a popular operating system used primarily in small business or as part of a larger network.

Revell says the move isn’t a response to the introduction of Microsoft’s Software Assurance, which costs 29% for upgrades.

Customs must be members of Novell’s volume licence agreement (typically smaller customers), government licence or corporate licence agreement programmes. The offer ends on October 15.
