Apple Computer

Beneath Mac OS X sits the open-source Darwin, a BSD/Unix clone.

IBM

The IT behemoth supports several open source projects. These include the Jikes Java byte-code compiler and a port, the JFS journalled file system for Linux. The company has also ported Linux to its S/390 and zSeries mainframes.

Sun Microsystems

Always on the lookout for ways to compete with Microsoft, Sun is supporting the OpenOffice productivity suite, on which it’s basing its commercial offering, StarOffice.

Silicon Graphics

A high-performance journalling file system, XFS, lots of contributions to the Linux kernel development and the OpenGL 3D toolkit bear witness of SGI’s firm commitment to open source.

HP

The hardware giant is shipping a range of Linux-based systems, plus supports a raft of open-source software development projects.

Dell

Being one of Microsoft’s largest partners hasn’t stopped Dell from shipping Linux on servers and desktops.
