Woolworths picks in-house IT chief

Managing disparate technologies and providing technical support to the online shopping operation are the main tasks Woolworths’ new IT director says he will shoulder in the role.

“One of our biggest challenges is that we have quite a mix of platforms, operating systems and databases, from mainframes to Unix and NT,” says David McArthur.

McArthur joined the Woolworths group, which comprises the Woolworths, Big Fresh and Price Chopper stores, in 1996 as systems development manager and has assumed the IT director’s role following the recent departure of Graeme Cox. McArthur would not say why Cox left.

On the online shopping side, McArthur will provide technical support to e-commerce manager Richard Harrison. Growth in online shopping has been “steady” and to Woolworths’ expectations, but McArthur declined to say what proportion of sales are online and in-store.
