E-cision revamps CM sales plan as version 2.0 goes live

Wellington-based software firm e-cision has scrapped ideas of offering a lower-end version of its content management product for New Zealand firms and simplified its pricing structure.

The company, which says it is currently porting customers to its new Java-based WebNovo version 2.0, originally planned a lower-end aimed at the New Zealand market, to be called WebNovo Express. But deciding just where to cut off features and pricing between Express and the full WebNovo product to be sold overseas became “a bit messy”, says managing director Anton Donde.

“Express was effectively a version 1.0,” says Donde. E-cision decided to make a full-featured product version 2.0 and price it “aggressively for the SME market”. Only those wanting the developers’ API tool or “full-blown” workflow engine pay more. Those that e-cision calls “registered users”, generally content providers, Donde says, pay a licence fee and only pay more for additional users. “As we move into the big corporates and offshore, this pricing model will work for us, without us having to screw around with it.”

E-cision originally developed the product using Cold Fusion, but last year was moving it to the J2EE Java development platform with the help of local Sun sales arm, SolNet. “The Java’s going to do what the Cold Fusion did — plus a whole lot more,” said Donde in August last year. That process is now complete, he says, and customers and partners are being ported to the new product. In August last year Donde said the company had six customers — companies such as Istart.co.nz, www.bnb.co.nz and Hitachi Data Systems in this country and one in the US.

Donde calls the product an information management framework, saying it handles both content and document management. It’s not a heavy-duty document management product, he acknowledges, but covers the full information management process through to publishing. He says some other local content management products are “pretty and easy to use” but offer far fewer features and little in the way of flexibility or integration ability.
