Newly formed TelstraClear has appointed its first chief financial officer, John Hooper. He is currently working in parent company Telstra's wholesale division, says spokesman Ralph Little.

"[Hooper] has an accounting background and has held a number of financial management roles, although lately he's had more of a commercial role," says Little. Hooper was general manager for Telstra Wholesale's business in Queensland.

TelstraClear has almost finished setting up its "leadership team" with only the network manager's role to be filled. A decision on any potential lay-offs has not been announced yet.

"Rosemary Howard [chief executive officer] has told the staff that by mid February through to the end of March staff would know where they'd be standing with regards to that."
