A webmaster is being sought by Whangarei District Council in 'winterless' Northland.

Title: Webmaster, Whangarei District Council

Function: Manage council website and intranet and develop improvements

Description: Answerable to information services manager, responsible for budget but no staff initially

A webmaster is being sought by Whangarei District Council in "winterless" Northland.

The council is expanding its existing online activities and so is creating the new dedicated vacancy.

The job involves managing the council’s extensive web and intranet activities and developing enhancements. Strong communication skills are required to ensure texpectations and needs are met.

WDC information services manager Polly Anderson says the council wants to get into e-commerce, to interact with its customers and receive payments such as rates online. “It’s a case of identifying what the customers need."

The webmaster would work within the corporate administration team, answerable to Anderson. S/he would be responsible for a budget but initially no staff.

WDC works in a Citrix Metaframe environment with Windows 2000 on its servers, using a dedicated local government software suite. HTML is used for web documents and PHP (a server-side HTML embedded scripting language) for databases on its intranet.

The council is seeking someone with tertiary qualification majoring in internet design management. Applications should have skills in hand-coding HTML, understanding web or server-side scripting, database (preferably MySQL) and SQL, how web servers work and skills in dynamic web content.

Anderson says the successful candidate is likely to be doing similar work, with at least four years' post-education experience in that area. Where the vacancy may lead to in terms of promotion depends very much on customer feedback, she says.

Anderson says there is nothing out of the ordinary about the role, but it is with a friendly small to medium-sized council in a nice area, only two hours north of Auckland. Deadline for applications is this Friday.

She declines to reveal a salary, saying the job is currently being evaluated. Barry O’Brien of Enterprise Recruitment estimates $45,000 to $50,000.
