Move over Jack and Pete, here's Rosemary

With the purchase of Clear from British Telecom by TelstraSaturn, the two top jobs have gone, replaced by Telstra Australia's choice for the hot seat, Rosemary Howard.

Howard was formerly Telstra's managing director of its wholesale division and she will move to Auckland to run the new subsidiary directly.

Clear's chief executive, Peter Kaliaropoulos, will remain with BT.

"He was brought in on contract to look after Clear during this previous period. We've got an agreement with Telstra that he will stay on during the transition and help support the new CEO," says a BT Asia Pacific representative. Kaliaropoulos will then return to BT "to look forward to new challenges".

Kaliaropoulos took over at the helm of Clear in August last year after moving from Singapore's telecommunications carrier StarHub where he was chief operating officer.

TelstraSaturn's former chief executive Jack Matthews will take a long holiday. "I have a six-year-old daughter who doesn't see enough of her father," he says. Matthews plans to stay in New Zealand in the foreseeable future but wouldn't divulge his plans for life beyond the new year.

"I like Wellington and I'm sure you'll hear more from me in the future."

Matthews was chief executive at Saturn before the merger with Telstra was announced and took over the reins of the joint venture when it was announced in early 2000.

Other layoffs are sure to be forthcoming from the newly merged companies, however a spokesman for Telstra would not be drawn on numbers.

"It's far too early to say at this point. We'll inform the staff and shareholders and then make it public."
