Users of Telecom and Vodafone cellphones are now able to text message each other across the network divide, although Telecom users will have to have the latest models of cellphone.

To encourage users to take up the service, Telecom is offering a special on messaging - 15 cents per message for the rest of the year.

Telecom had been running its own service which would allow its customers to text message Vodafone customers via a website, and general manager for Telecom mobile Mohan Jesudason says the company received a huge response to the service.

Vodafone warns its customers that they should check with the recipient to make sure their Telecom mobile can receive a message before sending as the sender will still be charged for the message even if it doesn't get through.

Vodafone also points out that Telecom customers can only receive 150 characters per message as well. Vodafone customers will still pay 20 cents per message.
