Chinese police have arrested a high-school student for allegedly hacking into government-run websites, according to a report in the official China Daily newspaper.

Wang Qun, 19, was detained in August after the country's largest science website was vandalised by someone called "Playgirl," and police were tipped off, the report says. According to China Daily, the teenager had replaced the site's front page with a pornographic image. The report did not reveal the name of the affected site.

Wang, who majored in computer studies, was arrested in Wuhan, in Central China, the report says. It is the country's first internet hacking case, according to the newspaper.

Although preliminary investigations, which included attempts to trace IP addresses and telephone calls, proved unsuccessful, police managed to track Wang through chatroom exchanges, where "Playgirl" bragged about his domestic and overseas hacking exploits, China Daily reports.

Police also examined Wang's computer which showed that he had taken advantage of flaws and weaknesses in websites and had replaced their homepages with pornography, the report says.

According to the newspaper report, the case is pending further investigation.
