Gateway closes all UK and Ireland stores

Gateway has closed its 14 stores in the UK and Ireland and laid off 1085 employees, it announced yesterday.

Gateway has closed its 14 stores in the UK and Ireland and laid off 1085 employees, it announced yesterday.

The closures were announced last month but could not take place until a 30-day employee consulation period had been completed.

The latest announcement follows Gateway's company-owned operations closing in New Zealand, Australia Malaysia, Singapore and Japan late last month (see Gateway closes NZ doors).

The 12 stores in the UK employed 185 people, while 900 people worked in Gateway's factory and two stores in Ireland.

A further 35 people across what Gateway calls SEEMEA (South Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa) will lose their jobs, said a Gateway spokeswoman.

The company was unable to make further comment immediately, because representatives were "tied up in employee communications," she said.

The closures are part of a cost-saving measure that will see 4600 employees laid off - 25% of its global workforce.
