Nokia to test modems in next fortnight

Problems with Nokia DSL modems will be rectified in the next week or so and will involve users taking their modems to a service centre for checking.

At the end of June Nokia issued a warning to users of M/MW1122 modems that some units have trouble with the plug connecting the modem to the power supply (see Nokia issues safety notice on DSL modems). One of the pins from the modem may snap off and remain attached to the power cord, presenting a risk of electrocution.

"It's roughly 0.5% of units - we've just about narrowed it down to a specific number of weeks of manufacture," says Nokia's general manager for broadband business, Rob Gill.

"We're in the final stages of preparing a letter to go out to end users advising them of the location of the service centres where they can take their modems." Nokia has developed a tool that will stress test the pins and users will be able to return home with either an assurance their modem is safe or a new modem.

"We have to download the settings off the modems first in case they need to be uploaded to a new unit." Gill wanted to make sure users didn't have to wait for replacements if their modem did prove to be faulty, so he has ordered in stock to cover any potential demand.

Users with questions can contact Nokia's helpdesk on 0800 665 427. The M1122 modem was introduced by Telecom in its second wave of modems for JetStream. The M1122 has four ethernet ports on the rear of the unit — the MW1122 has a wireless card instead.
