The Warehouse soldiers on without Telemedia

The Warehouse says it isn’t affected by the collapse of Telemedia despite relying on Telemedia software as the interface between its Gold Mobile user base and the Telecom mobile network.

“We own the platform that connects Gold Mobile to Telecom and we have legal agreements in place with Telemedia that cover continuity of service should they cease trading or underperform, that sort of thing,” says The Warehouse spokesman Bruce Gordon.

“It’s not as if they’re in liquidation, it’s receivership, so they’re still continuing to trade so the support is there if we need it.”

Gold Mobile accounts for around 200,000 users. The Warehouse doesn’t simply sell the handsets, it operates as a virtual cellular network on Telecom’s system, setting prices and deciding on cellphone availability, says Gordon. That doesn’t mean The Warehouse wouldn’t in future consider selling Vodafone connections as well, but that is a more complicated matter because The Warehouse delivers more functionality to the customer.

“We’re very happy with the Gold Mobile service but it’s fair to say we’re always looking at how we might deliver more value to customers. It’s not something we’d rule out but at this point our agreement is with Telecom.” Gordon says The Warehouse is closely watching Telecom’s CDMA network roll-out, which will offer faster mobile data services, and will be involved in some way.

“We keep an eye on upcoming technologies and what the different companies claim they can do, and we’re planning to do some work with Telecom to understand its migration path and where we fit into it.". Gordon says Gold Mobile will probably offer CDMA handsets and connections but that the handsets will be relatively expensive initially.

Telemedia went into receivership on June 6 with debts of about $A13 million. The Warehouse was one of the first big-name companies to use Telemedia’s telecommunications software.
