Title: Service delivery manager, AppServ, based in Auckland

Function: Manage service delivery agreements, report direct to chief executive

Description: Manage staff, clients, budgets and technologies

Dosh: $80,000 to $100,000

The growing ASP business presents opportunities at AppServ, a joint venture with Computerland NZ that specialises in delivering IT services from its own Auckland server facility.

The two-year-old firm, which employs four people backed by 100 others at Computerland, is seeking a service delivery manager and a business development manager to make the most of the growing opportunities it expects from ASP.

Chief executive Graham Clarke says AppServ is “breaking new ground” as ASPs have “the potential to be the next utilities, like telcos and power firms, but it’s delivering IT services with economies of scale”.

For the service delivery manager post, Clarke says the successful candidate will need experience managing the cost-effective delivery of services to meet or exceed service level agreements. Specific abilities needed include developing and managing processes to run complex IT and communication systems smoothly. Industry experience counts more than paper qualifications, Clarke says, but should include team leadership and process orientation abilities, plus “good experience” in thin clients, particularly Citrix, LAN/WAN environments, application architecture and the internet.

“Leading a combination of our internal team and the depth and resources within Computerland, it will be quite a wide role dealing with a range of people,” says Clarke. Being part of a small firm, the work will also be varied as people cover for each other. It also involves handling a growing budget, which could eventually amount to millions.

Clarke says since ASPs are new, the successful candidate is likely to be working in a more traditional data centre or corporate environment, or has helped in the development of processes for managing that environment. The potential for the role is “substantial” as ASP enjoys a “large growth path”.

“This person can play a role in the growth of the organisation and the growth of their own role. The right person, if they stick with us for the long term, can achieve anything. They have a substantial growth potential,” says Clarke.

The pay depends on experience. A “low end” person who would “grow with the business” would earn around $80,000, but for someone with “a very, very deep experience in this area, well over $100,000”, Clarke says.
