The country's minister of most things electronic, Paul Swain, is off overseas on portfolio-related business, including a session with Microsoft boss Bill Gates. As his flight was being called, Computerworld asked Swain what he was up to on several IT fronts for which he is responsible. Here's the Paul Swain diary, jotted down as he ran for his plane:

Monday, 9am — check the Crimes Amendment Bill to see if we need to add denial of service attack amendment.

10am — morning tea.

10.30am — talk to officials about the need for anti-spam legislation. Wonder what the Aussies are up to?

11am — let Telecom off the hook for not disclosing earnings from local loop as per Maurice Williamson’s Telecom Disclosure Act.

Noon — lunch.

1pm — put Telecom back on the hook with new legislation that requires it to demonstrate full cost/earnings from local loop. Expect lot of debate on this one from telcos.

2pm — make sure new legislation is on track for April introduction/August vote.

3pm — really should get on to the whole Telecommunications Commissioner thing.

4pm — see how the Vodafone interception negotiation is going. Don’t know where that $1.1 million figure came from.

5pm — check with PM’s office about GCSB and the search warrant business. New legislation needed pronto.

6pm — catch flight to Chile, then England, Ireland, Seattle, have tea with Bill then on to Silicon Valley.

April 2 — home for nap.
