Dear What Am I Worth,

I am working as a technical support for an ISP. My role involves DSL technical support and normal technical support, both Mac and PC, via email. I have been in this position for ten months.

My qualifications are BSc (in operation management) and MCSE (with TCP/IP and proxy server 2 as my electives). I have some experience in Vantive, ICMS (commercial level), Windows 3.11, Windows 95, 98, NT, Windows Me and Linux (Redhat - no commercial level). I am currently self-studying Cisco CCNA and RHCE and aiming to obtain both the certifications by January 2001.

Protocol Personnel replies: Your career path is really up to you from this point, as it would appear that you are at an entry level. You are obviously determined to get the major qualifications and hopefully these will open up new opportunities.

Your choice of certifications, namely MCSE, CCNA, RHCE, would indicate a strong leaning toward networking. You may eventually look at things like infrastructure design or systems administration. I would expect that with 10 months’ experience and an MCSE you would be earning around $35,000. As your commercial experience increases, coupled with new certifications, you should see a considerable increase.
