Microsoft says it plans to make a major announcement with R.R. Donnelley & Sons, a commercial printer of books, catalogs, magazines and other reading materials.

Microsoft says it plans to make a major announcement with R.R. Donnelley & Sons, a commercial printer of books, catalogs, magazines and other reading materials.

The software maker won't say what the announcement is all about, but claimed it will be of "historic proportions" and could "mark a new era in bringing words to life."

The news will be delivered at a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. today EST in New York's Algonquin Hotel by Dick Brass, vice president of technology development at Microsoft, and Mark Bayer, a senior vice president with R.R. Donnelley.

In August, Brass spoke at the Seybold publishing conference in San Francisco, where he unveiled Microsoft's ClearType technology. ClearType is designed to improve the resolution of on-screen text, and is expected to spur the use of so-called "e-books," or small computers used to display novels and other reading matter.

R.R. Donnelley, in Chicago, can be reached and on the Web at http://www.rrdonnelley.com/.
