The Sprint board of directors was expected to accept a $US65 billion merger offer from MCI WorldCom during a conference call overnight.

The board of directors' meeting was expected to be followed by a meeting of MCI WorldCom's board, which is expected to then approve the deal, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Sprint board met last week to consider a stock and cash bid worth $US72 billion from BellSouth. The board could not reach a decision about that proposal, but a special committee of the board voted unanimously to proceed with the MCI WorldCom bid, the Journal said, quoting unnamed sources familiar with the deal.

MCI WorldCom, in Jackson, Mississippi, can be reached at http://www.wcom.com/. Sprint, in Westwood, Kansas, can be reached at http://www.sprint.com/.
