Microsoft has outlined final packaging for the Windows 2000 operating system product line, most of which is due out by the end of this year.
Microsoft says the line will include four products:
-- Windows 2000 Server, a network operating system for department file and print functions, Internet use and entry-level application servers. The software will support systems including up to four processors.
-- Windows 2000 Advanced Server will support up to eight processors, and is aimed at critical Web and business-application servers. It will offer integrated clustering and load balancing.
-- Windows 2000 DataCenter Server, aimed at companies with high-end server needs. The software will support additional clustering functions and up to 32 processors.
-- Windows 2000 Professional for mainstream desktop and laptop use will support up to two processors.
The professional, server and advanced products are expected to be out by the end of the year, with the data center server software out 90 to 120 days later, Microsoft said in a statement outlining the packaging options. Pricing will be announced later.
