Digital, HP make PC market gains, Apple flops

Digital and Hewlett-Packard were the big movers in the PC market in the second quarter. Apple was the big loser. IDC's quarterly report shows Compaq still on top with 14.1% of the market but Digital breathing hard down its neck with 13.3%. Nearly all of Digital's gain was in the corporate market.

Digital and Hewlett-Packard were the big movers in the PC market in the second quarter. Apple was the big loser.

IDC’s quarterly report shows Compaq still on top with 14.1% of the market but Digital breathing hard down its neck with 13.3%. Nearly all of Digital’s gain was in the corporate market.

Hewlett-Packard has moved into the top six for the first time, in fourth place, behind PC Direct and ahead of IBM.

Apple has tumbled out of the top six for the first time, down to ninth place.

In the portable market, Toshiba continues to dominate but supply problems during the quarter reduced its share from more than 40% to around a third of the market. Compaq has significantly closed the gap, from a four to one ratio in the first quarter to two to one.

It’s the only part of the market that IBM did well in, in third place.

“It’s clearly a three-horse race now,” says IDC manager Graham Penn.
