State Insurance has finally made a decision on one of the biggest infrastructure deals in the market this year, worth up to $20 million over three years.

A Sequent-led consortium, which includes Fujitsu-Southmark and Datacraft, has won the contract, ahead of consortia led by EDS and Unisys.

State will purchase 1300 NT-based 166MHz Compaq PCs and around 76 NT Compaq lan servers from Fujitsu Southmark, which will provide the rollout. The whole system will be managed remotely by Fujitsu using Computer Associates’ Unicenter TNG.

Datacraft will provide an IP router-based network, and on-going management, to link State’s 100 outlets nationally, and Sequent’s existing servers will be upgraded.

State says the pricing for the deal is confidential but industry sources estimate the hardware component alone is worth around $5 million. On-going yearly costs are estimated at $5 million a year. State’s assistant general manager for IT, Mike Keehan, says work will begin immediately and will be completed early in 1998.
