Cisco Systems is continuing the migration of Fast Ethernet to the edge of enterprise networks, by introducing 100Mbit/s repeaters for workgroup and desktop connectivity.

The company has added the managed and unmanaged repeaters to its NetBeyond family of products for small and medium-sized organisations. Officials say the shared-media devices are designed for workgroups and companies that share large files for prepress, Web publishing and other applications.

The standalone FastHub 216T features 16 shared 100Base-TX ports with integrated RMON and SNMP management. The hub can be managed with CiscoWorks Window software or remotely through a VT100 console. Officials say Web browser-based management capability is under development.

Cisco's FastHub 116T is an unmanaged, stackable 16-port 100Base-TX hub.

Both hubs are Class II devices, which can be linked across an office to create a single 30-port collision domain without an intervening switched connection, saving switch ports. Officials say Cisco's repeaters support connections of 23m over copper wire, exceeding the Class II standard of 5m.

The FastHub 216T is available now and the FastHub 116T will ship in July.
