Apple Computer Inc. has fleshed out details of the restructuring plan that led in part to the resignation this week of Marco Landi, former vice president of Apple's worldwide sales and support division.

The changes consolidate Apple's product development, marketing, sales, support, and operations divisions along geographic lines, which the company hopes will make them more responsive to customer needs, officials said.

Apple Chairman and CEO Gilbert Amelio said yesterday that Landi left Apple in part because he would have been left with "a much smaller job" after the division was restructured. [See "Apple ExecutiveVP Landi Quits, Feb. 19. ]. Robin Abrams, previously senior vice president of Apple Americas, will serve as acting executive vice president of the new worldwide sales and support organization.

The new structure will take the following form:

-- North America Business Division will focus on three markets: PEN (Publishing/Entertainment/New Media), Enterprise, and SED (Scientific/Engineering/Design), and will include Next Sales and Professional Services.

-- North America Education Division will focus mainly on the K-12 and higher education markets.

-- North America Consumer Division will focus on two markets, consumer and the Macintosh installed base.

Separate sales and support divisions were also created for EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), Japan, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America.

The AppleAssist Division, responsible for Apple's customer service and warranty activities, remains unchanged, as does the company's Claris sales division.
