In the second major Asian telecoms infrastructure announcement in a week, Teleglobe International Corp. says it has agreed with Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. to jointly build a 45Mbit/sec Internet backbone network between Singapore and the U.S.

Unlike the SEA-ME-WE 3 cable announced this week, which has support from more than 70 carriers and will vastly boost bandwidth between Western Europe and South East Asia, the agreement is a redeployment to IP of existing capacity in the region. Under the agreement, the companies will buy bandwidth in the Asia-Pacific region to supplement SingTel's existing network there. Teleglobe will provide the corresponding half of the international leased circuit, including access to Internet sites in the U.S.

The expected cost and other financial terms of the new agreement were not disclosed.

The network is expected to enable Internet service providers in Singapore to offer faster and improved access to the global Internet, and is scheduled to be available in April.

SingNet, SingTel's Internet access service, provides Internet service to more than 20 countries in the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean regions and claims to be the largest ISP in Singapore.

TeleGlobe International is the global carrier subsidiary of Teleglobe Inc., which operates a network of cables and satellites linking North America with more than 200 countries and territories.
