Robert J. Frankenberg, who resigned in August as chairman and CEO of Novell, has resurfaced, having been elected to serve on the board of Caere Corp., the company announced yesterday.

The appointment, effective immediately, ends months of speculation over where Frankenberg, 49, would turn after his departure from networking and applications software maker Novell.

Caere, in Los Gatos, California, develops optical character recognition software and desktop management technology and products. Before joining Novell in 1994, Frankenberg worked at Hewlett-Packard for 25 years, where he rose to head the divisions that produce the company's Vectra PCs and NetServer PC servers. He also sits on the boards of America Online and Electroglas.
