Trade Me bids on improved data replication

Software helps NZ auction side reduce replication time by 90 per cent

New Zealand auction website, Trade Me, has reduced the time it takes to replicate data between its Wellington and Auckland data centres by 90 per cent since deploying data acceleration software.

It introduced the Silver Peak software a year ago to enhance the performance of its EMC RecoverPoint remote data protection environment.

According to Trade Me, the company’s website generates 60 per cent of New Zealand’s domestic Internet traffic so it was crucial that its systems run 24/7.

Trade Me head of storage and networks Allister Maguire said that every night the company replicates a “considerable volume” of information between the Wellington and Auckland facilities.

This information includes 2 terabytes of compressed and encrypted database back-ups and 4TB of EMC data.

“By dissolving distance and link quality, we’ve achieved up to 20 times faster data mobility over the wide area network,” he said in a statement. “That’s quite substantial and means the data is available instantly to users in both data centres.”

According to Maguire, the Silver Peak software has also proven cost effective as hardware-based wide area network (WAN) appliances can be more expensive.

“A virtual appliance might not be fit for everyone, but at Trade Me it’s proven to be cost effective while delivering the sort of high availability and performance that we demand.”
