Vodafone records 300,000 4G customers in first year

Data demand driving 4G uptake

Vodafone New Zealand has signed more than 300,000 customers to its 4G-enabled plans since the network was switched on a year ago.

The past six months have seen a 177 per cent increase in 4G customers, with 30,000 joining since the launch of 4G-enabled prepaid plans eight weeks ago.

According to the telecommunications provider, 4G adoption has been driven by demand for mobile data. It claims the average 4G user consumes double the data of a 3G customer on its network. Video and music streaming as well as social media are at the helm of usage.

Vodafone claims 4G data use quadrupled between July 2014 and January 2014, with total data use across its network growing 70 per cent in the same period.

Vodafone’s 4G currently services 36 locations around the country.

The 4G network will also go live in Dunedin, Hastings, Invercargill, Napier, Nelson, Rotorua, and Whangarei by the end of April.
