Microsoft unifies OneDrive consumer and workplace versions on Android app

The company says this is the first step to unify OneDrive and OneDrive for Business

Microsoft has consolidated the consumer and enterprise editions of OneDrive under a single Android app, a move it plans to replicate across all the platforms that the cloud storage service runs on.

In an update rolling out Thursday, the Android app will give users access to both their OneDrive and OneDrive for Business accounts, so that they have their personal and work files in a single place. The files will be listed separately under work and personal categories within the app.

Microsoft said this is "the first example" of a process to create "a single, unified OneDrive experience" that matches people's usage of their devices for both professional and personal matters.

The iOS and Windows Phone apps for OneDrive will follow suit in the coming months. It's not clear whether Microsoft plans to extend this unified OneDrive/OneDrive for Business effort to its desktop and Web versions as well.

The updated Android app has other new features, including the ability for end users to set up a four-digit security pin to access it, a speedier camera backup process and the ability to open OneDrive files directly from other applications.

Microsoft also updated the OneDrive app for iOS with a search function native to iPhones and iPads and with the addition of an "all photos" view that lets users see all pictures stored in OneDrive and arranged chronologically.

Meanwhile, users of the OneDrive app for Windows Phone 8.1 now have access to the OneDrive recycle bin, so that they can fish out from there files or folders they deleted by mistake.
