Looking back, Andy Lark remembers a time sitting at the Los Gatos Coffee Roasting company many years ago.

Chatting about Aftermail with Rod Drury, Lark recalls an idea on paper called Xero.

“We’ve all come a long way since then,” says Lark, who was appointed Xero’s global Chief Marketing Officer last week.

Following years of advising and consulting the Kiwi start-up firm, Lark, Drury and Xero are converging again,

Based in Sydney, Lark will take up his new role in November, working closely with the Xero teams in Australia, New Zealand, the US and UK.

“I’ve had plenty of opportunities come my way but few that combine the growth, global scale and maturity of business to allow me to have a real impact,” he says.

“I’ve already been asked the question, so what are your plans? Obviously I can’t answer that until I’m fully onboard, but I’ve been working with Xero, as Group Lark, on advancing their marketing strategy and plotting growth.”

According to Lark, the opportunity at Xero is “nearly limitless” with the majority of small businesses not using any kind of platform to grow on.

“With the rise of mobile to become the 1st screen we use – and the arrival of beautiful software born in the cloud, that will change,” he claims.

“Invoicing, paying employees and suppliers, checking cash-flow – all become activities we do anywhere, anytime, anyplace on Xero."

With over 25 years of industry experience to fall back on, Lark believes the key is “accounting”, as it goes from being a dedicated task to one completed in the flow of business.

“And we then get to collaborate without friction or cost with our advisors,” he adds. “That’s a beautiful thing.”

While it feels like the Xero journey started for Lark sometime ago, its really just getting going.
