Hacking for good

Volunteers needed this weekend to help Wellington-based not for profits hurdle their ICT challenges.

Charity-IT
is calling on ICT professionals to volunteer this weekend helping not for profit organisations overcome their ICT challenges.

The group is looking for IT volunteers with skills in software development, system administration, and UX/design for the event on 27 February to 1 March, at Servcorp's offices in Vodafone on the Quay, 157 Lambton Quay.

Charity-IT is also inviting IT students and graduates to gain real-life practical experience in working for an IT project alongside experienced professionals.

The event is sponsored by local IT firms Snapper, Psoda and Servcorp.

Snapper CTO Norman Comerford will be present during the hackathon to help the teams with project management.

“Our hackathons allow IT professionals to contribute to charity and give back to their community without having to commit any further time to the charity after the weekend,” says Althea Carbon, co-founder of Charity IT.

“Moreover, it is a great opportunity to volunteer while working with like-minded individuals and sharing their expertise and passion.”

This weekend’s hackathon will help the following charities: YMCA Wellington, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Able Pet Care and Nature through the Arts.

The charity projects are primarily website creations and improvements in processes around engaging with the public and community base.

If the primary purpose is finished, the IT volunteers will work through the other items on the charities' IT wish list, such as making IT operational tweaks, or creating templates, says Carbon.
