Kiwi start-ups on high alert as health giant places $100K premium on innovation

Calling all New Zealand technology start-up companies looking for support in bringing their innovation to market.

International, research-based group Bayer New Zealand is inviting health technology start-up companies looking for support to bring their innovation to market to apply to the Grants4Apps Accelerator program.

An initiative that was launched globally by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals in 2013, the Grants4Apps Accelerator program is designed to encourage the development and realisation of innovations in software services, hardware, technologies, or apps that have the potential to create value for doctors and patients.

For the five chosen start-ups in 2015, the Grants4Apps Accelerator program will provide funding of €50,000 each, over NZ$100,000, mentoring by Bayer experts as well as seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, plus office space for 100 days at Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals headquarters in Berlin.

“Innovation is what drives Bayer and we are keen to support others in developing initiatives that can make a real difference to the lives of doctors and patients,” says Riaz Buksh, Pharmaceuticals Country Head, Bayer New Zealand.

"Bayer recognises the creative potential outside the company and believes that combining expertise is key to innovation and success.

“Complementing our own capabilities by establishing relationships with excellent partners from science and industry is an essential element of our strategy and one that adds great value at all levels and phases of our business.

“The Grants4Apps Accelerator creates an ideal environment to foster digital innovation in healthcare and is an excellent example of our engagement in open innovation.”

Buksh says the Grants4Apps program is particularly looking for any integrated next-generation technology that supports patient adherence, diagnosis, therapy management or prevention.

The application process is now open and closes on May 31 with the five successful start-ups from this year’s submissions travelling to Berlin for the intense ‘incubation’ at Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals’ offices from August 10 until December 4.
